Sophomore Girls Crowned Conference Champs

Burbank, IL (February 10, 2011) - The sophomore girls&; basketball team defeated the Shepard Astros 43-23 tonight to capture the SSC Conference title.   The team finished 17-8 over-all and 9-4 in conference, one game up on second-place Oak Lawn.

For second-year coach Art Gamino, finishing ahead of the Spartans was especially gratifying.  "We lost to them earlier in the year and had to win out the rest of the way to win conference.  That is exactly what these girls did.  I&;m so proud of them."

According to Gamino, the buzzer beating win against Oak Forest and the win on the road against SSC Blue foe TF South were two games that defined the toughness of his team.  "I was nervous about the last few games," explained Gamino, "but the kids knew what they wanted and they got it done.  They were never nervous."

Chanel Koepke, who led the Rams in scoring tonight with 17 points, couldn&;t be happier with her team&;s title.  "We were so excited after the game," she said.  "We worked so hard in practice all year and it finally paid off."  Donna Mierwa added 10 points in the game and Gabi Wallace chipped in 7points.
