1980 Team Honored at Homecoming

Burbank, IL (October 9, 2010) - The 1980 State Runner-up team was honored before the varsity game this Saturday.  Over 25 alums from the squad and six of their coaches were in attendance at the Homecoming game against Oak Lawn.  "What a great turn-out we had for the day," said the head coach of the 1980 team, Dennis Wierzal.  "It was something all these guys really appreciated."

The pre-game festivities began with the team and coaching staff being honored at mid-field.  After all their names were announced to the crowd, Superintendent Dr. Dan Riordan presented the IHSA State Runner-up trophy once again to Coach Wierzal, who walked it down his line of former players, so they could touch it Stanley Cup-style.  When the game began, the honorees were escorted to a hospitality tent where they were treated to food and drinks.  It also allowed them to do some catching up with old friends.  "What a great day for the coaches and players," said Wierzal.  "It was so much fun telling stories and recalling plays with some of these guys that I haven&;t seen in so many years."

Thirty years ago, Reavis football began an incredible three-year run.  The 1980 and 1981 squads finished second in State, and the 1982 team won the 6A State Championship.  Reavis plans to honor each of these teams over the next three years.  Wierzal said, "I&;ll never forget those years; they were some of the best of my life."

Also honored with the team was long-time chain crew member, Rich Carstensen.  Carstensen, who has headed the chain gang at Reavis football games for over 30 years, is retiring from the position after the season.  Assistant Superintendent Tim Smith honored Carstensen with a plaque.
