State Badminton Championship for Mangala/Zayed, 5th in State for Bachleda/Yanes

Charleston, IL (May 11, 2013)  Marissa Mangala and Denna Zayed clinch the IHSA State Doubles Championship at Eastern Illinois University this weekend.  Both Marissa and Denna went undefeated (6-0) in the State Championships while teammates Jessica Bachleda and Riyan Yanes lost only once in the tournament (7-1) to take home a 5th place finish.  Marissa Mangala and Denna Zayed were seeded 3 in the State competition while Jessica Bachleda and Riyan Yanes were not seeded.  Marissa and Denna clinched wins from St. Charles North (21-9, 21-14), Hinsdale Central (21-17, 21-14), TF South (21-14, 21-14), and Downers Grove North ( seed in tournament plus undefeated all season, 21-18, 21-12).  It was then that Marissa and Denna went into the finals going against a team that they lost 3rd place to in the 2012 State Championships.  Marissa and Denna went against TF South's, Pollard and Pasko, which was the only team that gave them their losses all season.  Marissa and Denna fought hard with 13-21, 22-20, and 21-18 to be the 2nd in Reavis's history to win the State Championship.  Our other doubles team, Jessica Bachleda and Riyan Yanes, took home a 5th place finish after staying alive in the consolation round for 5 matches.  Jessica and Riyan defeated Glenbard West (21-14, 21-9) and Hinsdale South (21-12, 21-13).  In their third round of competition, Jessica and Riyan lost to Buffalo Grove 14-21, 18-21 sending them to the consolation round.  It was in the following rounds that kept hope alive for the girls.  They triumphed against Lyons Township (18-21, 21-14, 21-15) and Naperville North (21-15, 21-18) which brought them back to compete in Saturday's quarterfinals and semifinals.  On Saturday, they defeated Mt. Prospect (15-21, 21-14, 21-14) and TF South (10-21, 29-27, 21-16).  The TF South team of Breshock/Corpuz gave Riyan and Jessica a run for the money all season long and Jessica and Riyan only defeated them once during the regular season.  Playing for 5th place, Jessica and Riyan saw Buffalo Grove, the same team they lost to on Friday's competition only to see them again for a medal which they outplayed with a score of 21-14 and 21-19.  Overall the Lady Rams took home a 4th place team finish, the best in Reavis's history.
