Verduzco qualifies in BOTH discus and shot put

Western Springs, IL  (May 10, 2012).  This has been one of the best seasons yet for the Girls Track and Field team.  The team competed at the Lyons Township IHSA Sectional meet last night--and when I say compete, I mean COMPETE!  The night started off on a positive note when sophomore Stephanie Verduzco tossed a 36 foot shot put, which qualified her to the State meet at Eastern Illinois University with a second place finish.  And if you think Stephanie was done--you are wrong!  She came back from a bit of a rough start in the discus on her last toss to secure another second place state qualifying effort with a 102 foot.  It was a sight to see!  Incredible.  The 4x800m relay team of Hannah Howard, Sabina Bukowska, Sam Wolfe, and Michele Lewellen kept up their great performance by finishing 4th place overall.  This is the highest this relay team has finished at a Sectional meet.  Junior Nicole Maier ran the most incredible race of her running life with a personal best time of 11:59 in the 3200m.  She battled hard the whole race, but ended up with a 3rd place finish, just missing qualifying by one spot.  The 4x400m relay team of Sam Wolfe, Sam Christianson, Hannah Howard, and Paulina Gal ended up with a mind-blowing 4th place finish--again--one of the highest finishes as far as records indicate.  Sophomore Paulina Gal powered through in her events with a 5th place finish in the shot put and a 5th place finish in the 300m hurdles.  Senior Erika Fastwolf had a very good showing as she finished 6th place in the discus.  Great way to end her senior year!   Junior Ashlie Wiechec did a great job also, as she hopped her way to a 5th place, personal best triple jump and a 6th place long jump.  The team had a great night, as they scored an awesome 37.5 points at this Sectional meet, which is has not happened in over 20 years.  Great job to all of the ladies!  Good luck to Stephanie next weekend as she competes for the desired All-State honors in the shot put and discus.
