STATE BOUND - GAL, MELLENTHIN, GRZYCH

Lagrange, IL  (May 10, 2013).  STATE BOUND!  Congrats to Junior Paulina Gal (1st in discus and 2nd in the 300m hurdles), Junior Mackenzie Mellenthin (2nd in the discus), and Senior Kelley Grzych (tied for 3rd in the high jump) who are all traveling to Eastern Illinois University to participate in the IHSA State Finals.  Mackenzie was leading the discus up to the last throw from Paulina who went from 3rd to 1st on her last throw.  Paulina upset the field in the 300m hurdles at the last hurdle to qualify, and Kelley was a "surprise" to say the very least as she upset almost 6 jumpers to qualify.  Kelley also finished an impressive 4th place in the 100m hurdles, gaining more points for the Rams.  Senior Ashlie Wiechec finished 3rd in the triple jump, as Senior Sam Christianson finished 6th in the triple jump.  Paulina Gal also finished 3rd in the shot put, as Mackenzie Mellenthin finished 6th in the shot put.  Junior Michele Lewellen almost pulled it off in the 800m.  She took charge early, but ended up a tough 4th place overall finish.  Senior Nicole Maier finished 4th overall in the 3200m and 7th overall in the 1600m, running the last of her high school races.  Side note:  Nicole will keep the running going as she will be attending Olivet Nazarene University running both cross country and track at the collegiate level.   The 4x400m relay of Sam Christianson, Michele Lewellen, Alex Malmborg, and Susu Almousa scored points with a 5th place finish.  The 4x800m relay team of Sabina Bukowska, Susu Almousa, Paulina Marusarz, and Maggie Wojtowicz finished 5th also.  Anyone scoring in the top 6 score points, thus giving the Rams 59 points for a FOURTH place team finish!  Incredible!  Freshman Sylvia Kozielski was the first Reavis athlete to make it into a finals of a sprint race in over 15 years, and finished an impressive 7th place overall out of 26 athletes.  Freshman Alex Malmborg also finished 7th place out of 22 runners, and gained a LOT of experience running at this Sectionals.  The 4x200m relay team of Sam Christianson, Taylor Behling, Sylvia Kozielski, and Kelley Grzych finished a suprising 7th place.  "What an incredible meet for the Rams!" exclaims Coach Laurie Schoenfeld.  She continues by saying "Not only is this the Rams best finish in over 18 years, but to get 3 athletes down state in 4 events...WOW!  I could not be prouder as a Head Coach.  And a job well done to Coach Kreil, Coach Glynn, and Coach Pape."  Good luck to Paulina, Mackenzie, and Kelley at STATE!
